The Berkeley Training Center’s main objective is to train and recycle healthcare professionals and students using the most advanced simulation technology. In those simulators, it is possible to train the professional in an extremely interactive way, simulating real cases in real time. The trainee will be in a completely ethical environment, learning and practising protocols and delicate scenarios.

Located in Rio de Janeiro at the Rio Sul Tower and occupying an area of approximately 800 square meters, we offer simulators for Videolaparoscopy, Ultra Sound, Trauma, Intensive Care, Pre-Hospitalar Area, Cardio-respiratory Emergency and Clinical Emergencies. All those simulators are located in different cells, making the Center a real hospital where all the patients are robots and ready to be used. The Simulators are connected to real medical equipment, making the environment completely realistic for the trainee. All those different cells have sophisticated video and audio connection, creating a complete experience.

Medical Simulation

Human Patient SimulatorIn Medical Simulation, the technical part – if the drug used was the best choice or if the surgery was successful – is not the only important factor. The human side is also analysed, as is the way the professional deals with the patient. Medical simulation is the creation, monitorization and revision of a controlled medical event, with the objective of educating the healthcare professional and student and expanding the experience all in critical situations. Simulation centers are already considered a crucial part in training for the aviation industry and are now becoming a important tool in the training in healthcare professionals as well. Real Patient Simulators were created to train a great variety of professional and students in the diagnosis and behaviour in stress situations, without any risks.

Stations

Resuscitation room: In this room all the protocols for Basic Life Support are shown. Using electronic mannequins, the trainee is giving a electronic report evaluating the performance and the success of the protocol.

Trauma room: In this room the teams are face to face with numerous different trauma situations, like gunshot wounds, burns, fractures, road accidents, etc. The main goal of this cell is to teach the systematic of care for the trauma patient.

SurgeryVideolaparoscopy: A simulator that is capable of adapting to the needs of the trainee, keeping a record of the qualities and deficiencies of each professional.

strong>Surgical center: A robot patient that speaks, blinks, breathes, reacts to pain and responds to drugs and anaesthetic agents. Connected to real medical equipment such as monitors and ventilators, the evolution of the patient is up to the performance of the trainee.

Neonatal ICU: It is possible to train manoeuvres in resuscitation, intubation, ventilation and monitorization of the new-born. And now, with the arrival of the brand new Baby Simulator, it is possible to make diagnostics and interact with a baby that cries, laughs and simulates all the different scenarios of a real infant in an ICU.

HandAdult ICU: Presenting a “Gold Standard” ICU, where all the healthcare professionals can work with the best equipment and resources available in the market. This patient is the top in the world of simulation; He really breathes, inhaling oxygen and exhaling CO2, presenting results that are compatible with the pathological case of the simulation. All the monitors and medical equipment that are connected to the robot see it as a real patient as it gives off real vital signs. The trainees can make a wide variety of exams, use different drugs, make evasive and non evasive procedures, make a complete nutritional balance, etc.

Coronary unit: This station presents the main arrhythmia and advanced cardiologic support. A defibrillator is demonstrated, teaching the trainee how to use it in the most secure way.

Ultra sound unit: Our Ultra Sound Simulator, with similar human skin consistency, is capable of simulating many problems and generates the proper images in real time.

New Station: Pre-Hospitalar Area

Ambulance SimulatorAlways expanding and trying to find new solutions in simulation training, The Berkeley Training Center trough its technology department created the first Brazilian Ambulance Simulator.

The Brazilian SAMU and other private companies in the pre-hospitalar area have already being trained in this new facility and the results were excellent.

This station trains professionals in critic outdoor scenarios, such as roadside accidents, fires, heart failure and more, with accreditation from the Lancashire Ambulance Service/NHS of the United Kingdom.

Telemedicine

imageThe Berkeley Training Center offers a state of the art Telemedicine system to improve medical consult and time of treatment.

Consisting of a mobile and a central system, the main objective of the telemedicine is to create faster care for every patient, everywhere.

Courses

ClassroomThe Berkeley Training Center has over 30 courses and trains more than 5000 people a year. The basic structure of a course consists of scenarios and objectives. The trainee has a pre- test with the main objectives of the course and then proceeds to a hands-on simulation experience with different scenarios with the same objectives. After the simulation, all trainees take part in a post-test evaluation. After each course, a document is created with a complete evaluation of not only the trainee and all the main objectives of the course but also the progress of the course itself.

Among the courses the Berkeley Training Center provides are: Anesthesia Crisis Resource Management, Pre-Hospital Advanced Care, Medical Shifts, Hemodialisis for Nurses and Technicians, and Train the Trainer

Berkeley Monitor Program

Due to the experience acquired in the years working with medical simulation, Berkeley Training Center took a natural step in its own process of evolution. This step is the creation of a program to form new instructor’s to work in medical simulation. This concept started four years ago with our Monitor Program.

Emergency RoomThe Program starts with a selection of students of Medicine, Nursing and Physiotherapy who are in their third year of University. This selection is made trough a theoretical-practical evaluation and an interview. After this process, the selected students start to participate in educational activities with the objective of developing didactical abilities in simulation. All those activities are made with the supervision of Berkeley’s senior staff. They start their spell in the Training Center as Junior Monitors and then based on their success they graduate to Senior Monitors, Junior Instructors and Senior Instructors.

During their participation in the Program, the monitors have at their disposal all the infra-structure and incentives necessary to produce the best results possible.

Now, The Berkeley Training Center is very proud to say that during these years it has formed excellent and enthusiastic young professionals in the health care area with a high level of commitment and a full understanding of all aspects of Simulation.

The success of these new professionals is without a doubt, Berkeley’s greatest accomplishment.

Future Projects

eLearningNever afraid of new challenges, The Berkeley Training Center is now developing a tool that will create a revolution in e-learning. With an in house team of programmers, designers, web specialists and Health Care professionals, Berkeley is creating a new breed of virtual simulation.
